چکیده

Water is a fundamental resource in freshwater ecosystems, and streamflow plays pivotal role driving riverine ecology biodiversity. Ecologically functional flows, managed hydrographs that are meant to reproduce the primary components of natural hydrograph, touted as potential way forward restore ecological functions highly modified rivers, while also balancing human water needs. A major challenge implementing flows will be establishing shape hydrograph so optimize improvements ecosystem given limited resources. Identifying flow–biology relationship thus critical for determining environmental consequences flow regulation. In California's Central Valley, studies have found increased can improve survival imperiled juvenile salmon populations during their oceanward migration. These not explored nonlinearities between survival, giving managers difficult task designing intended help without clear guidance on targets. We used an information theoretic approach analyze migration data from 2436 acoustic-tagged Chinook spanning differing years (2013–2019) extract actionable flow–survival relationship. This was best described by step function, with three thresholds we defined minimum (4259 cfs), historic mean (10,712 high (22,872 cfs). Survival varied threshold: 3.0% below minimum, 18.9% mean, 50.8% high, 35.3% above high. these design alternative over same included important component flows: spring pulse flows. compared predicted cohort actual hydrographs. Managed targeted were increase annual 55–132% any additions budget 79–330% modest addition budget. quantitative estimates biological different provide regimes benefit constrained management arena.

Probabilistic nonlinear prediction of river flows

[1] In the recent past the nonlinear prediction (NLP) method, initially developed in the context of nonlinear time series analysis, has been successfully applied to river flow deterministic forecasting. In this work a probabilistic approach to the NLP method is proposed, which allows one to estimate the probability distribution of the predicted discharge values and to quantify the total uncerta...

Native fish and minimum flows in the Kakanui River

The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of native fish in the Kakanui River, their importance, and to assess low flows for maintenance of native fish habitat. The mainstem of the river was electrofished at 13 locations from near the estuary to the headwaters 54 km upstream. Eleven native fish species were found. Eight of these were reasonably abundant and their requirements ...

Chaotic Analysis and Prediction of River Flows

Analyses and investigations on river flow behavior are major issues in design, operation and studies related to water engineering. Thus, recently the application of chaos theory and new techniques, such as chaos theory, has been considered in hydrology and water resources due to relevant innovations and ability. This paper compares the performance of chaos theory with Anfis model and discusses ...

The imperiled fish fauna in the Nicaragua Canal zone

Large-scale infrastructure projects commonly have large effects on the environment. The planned construction of the Nicaragua Canal will irreversibly alter the aquatic environment of Nicaragua in many ways. Two distinct drainage basins (San Juan and Punta Gorda) will be connected and numerous ecosystems will be altered. Considering the project's far-reaching environmental effects, too few studi...
